Responses to Course Material
September 22: So far AP Literature has mostly been a recap of things we've learned before with a little more detail, as well as learning the basic structure of the AP Essay section. We reviewed what kind of things are used as evidence in a paper (DIDLS), but looked at each of them in a new way. With diction we got very specific, so now I have a better vocabulary to describe the way the diction works. We also studied the processes in reading and writing: how authors create meaning using techniques to make effects, and how readers can analyze that process. By learning about analyzing literature, we started to see how analyzing and essay writing work hand in hand. We also used our new found analyzing skills to pick apart prompts. This activity really helped me see how much a prompt can give away that I'd never even noticed before, like the basic thesis only without your opinion. A prompt can give you the techniques, effects, and meaning of the text you are supposed to analyze. I've really enjoyed the first few weeks of this class because I am finally in a classroom where I have some input on how I see the effects and meaning in a text. Also, it's nice that we haven't shied away from texts that aren't "child appropriate".

I agree with you about the prompts! I'm also really amazed by how one sentence in a prompt can mean about 50 thousand different thing. "Shying away from child appropriate text" I definitely agree with you here as well, in all of the classes it's really annoying how we can't read books that are actually really interesting, but have some not school appropriate subjects.
ReplyDeleteI was also suprised to find out how much "hidden" stuff was in a prompt. When we picked a part the prompts to really helped me understand how much I need to include, whether I'll have time to include it all is another story. I also felt that I have been tought alot of the subject matter before, but never in this much detail. While I'm still pretty rust, I've been noticing that I'm getting better at recognizing those aspects of a work and recognizing them more quickly.
ReplyDeleteFrom the beggining, I agrred about AP lit being a sort of review of other lit classes. We have learned the simple basic parts of DIDLS, but more in depth now. I like that we " pick apart" prompts, by looking for techniques and effects, because it gives me a goal to focus on, along with the "hidden so what" question. I don't necessarily liek eveything we have read in this class, but I do appreciate the variety from the typical material we have read in other classes.
